The Program in Law and Humanities and the Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law present Philosophizing International Law: From an Order of Fear to an Order of Respect
Professor Anthony Carty
Professor of Public Law, University of Aberdeen
Tuesday, February 12, 2008
4:00 pm – Room 1008
Cardozo School of Law
Fifth Avenue and 12th Street
New York City
The international legal order is dominated by a concern for security, whether national or individual, an explicit fear of the Other, towards whom one exists in no moral relation. Professor Carty offers an exit strategy from a world of fear to one of respect. He proposes that the current order be countered through a phenomenology of the person in community, following Paul Ricouer, which restores the ethical dimension of society. Professor Carty’s most recent book, "Philosophy of International Law," has been described as "a fundamental challenge to the foundations of the discipline of international law." Join Professor Carty in what promises to be an engaging and entertaining discussion of legal philosophy and current international affairs.
