This article explores the relevance of Confucian thinking to two issues of governance in the contemporary world. The first issue is the use of mediation as a means of dispute settlement that is an alternative to litigation. The second issue concerns the existence of political systems such as the existing regime in the PRC that depart from the dominant Western model of liberal democracy. This article explores whether or to what extent Confucian philosophy may elucidate the existing thinking and practice in China today in these regards.
