In 2024, the Federal Election Commission (FEC) issued updated regulations to subject some political content promoted online for a fee to mandatory disclosure. Some, but not all. Individuals were notably omitted from the updated disclosure scheme. To protect consumer interests in an influencer-driven internet market, individuals must be required to divulge when they exchange payment for political promotion.
