Joseph Raz was one of the leading moral, legal, and political philosophers of the English-speaking world for more than a half-century, from the early 1970s until his death in 2022. He amassed a corpus of over five thousand published pages, written over a period of sixty years, one of the largest among philosophers of the last century. His third book, The Authority of Law (1979), facilitated a revolution in legal philosophy, in which the relations between law and reasons for action are treated as fundamental in the explanation of the nature of law. Several of the book’s main arguments are distinguished, and their impact on broader discussions of law, authority, the rule of law, and political obligation are briefly canvassed.
