F. E. Guerra-Pujol (Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico; University of Central Florida) has posted Coase’s Fable on SSRN. Here is the abstract:
This paper is an updated version of my 2023 law review article “Coase’s Parable.” Here, I describe Ronald Coase’s insight that harms are a reciprocal problem as “Coase’s axiom” and investigate its origins in the history of ideas. Specifically, how did Coase come up with this counter-intuitive axiom? My conjecture is that he either borrowed or stole it from Arnold Plant or had an “aha” moment sometime after reading a series of nuisance law cases in one of Plant’s undergraduate courses.
