Adam Perry (University of Oxford – Faculty of Law) has posted The Track Record Argument for Epistemic Preemption on SSRN. Here is the abstract:
That an expert holds a view on a matter within their area of expertise is a reason for a non-expert to hold the same view. But what type of reason is it, precisely? Many philosophers think that an expert’s view is a reason that preempts consideration by a non-expert of other, relevant reasons. The main argument for this view is that preemption best improves the non-expert’s track record of holding accurate beliefs. Here I show that the track record argument rests on the fallacy of division.
