Review essay of Alan Supiot's Homo Juridicus: On the Anthropological Function of the Law. The article discusses Supiot's anthropologically grounded case against the subordination of law to the logic of the market. It considers Supiot's account of the origins of Western law and his inquiry into its humanizing, anthropological function, one that risks being buried by ‘scientific’ approaches that ignore the human being as subject and treat her as mere object. A central focus is Supiot's critique of the Law and Economics movement and his prescriptions for a global social hermeneutics.
