Conference Announcement: Association for Political Theory at Middleton

CALL FOR PAPERS

The Association for Political Theory (APT) invites proposals for its sixth annual conference to be held October 9-12, 2008 at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. The APT is an interdisciplinary organization devoted to supporting political theory and political philosophy. The APT Conference provides a collegial setting for s cholars of various professional ranks, institutional af filiations and theoretical approaches to engage one another in fruitful discussions of their work. The Association welcomes paper submissions from all approaches and on all topics in political theory, political philosophy, and the history of political thought. Paper proposals from academic faculty, advanced PhD candidates, and independent scholars are welcome. Faculty members are also encouraged to apply to serve as chairs or discussants.
Because of the relatively small size of the conference and our goal of encouraging significant interaction among participants from di f ferent types of institutions and dif ferent ranks, the Association accepts few standard whole panel proposals and reserves the right to alter or recombine any proposed panels. See the Program Committee’s Proposal Guidelines for more information on the Association’s approach to panels and proposals.
Space limitations may restrict the number of proposals accepted. For the 2007 conference, 220 proposals were submitted, with about 100 (45 percent) accepted.

APPLYING TO PARTICIPATE

To submit a paper proposal, suggest an innovative panel or roundtable, or volunteer to serve as a chair or discussant, please visit the APT Gateway website at http://apt.coloradocollege.edu and use the on-line conference proposal form. Click on the “APT Conferences” link for that form, as well as for general information about the 2008 conference. Note: The on-line proposal submission forms will not be operational until sometime after the New Year.

Applicants should submit abstracts of 300-400 words, using the on-line form, no later than February 15, 2008. Applicants may indicate their preferred panel type (traditional, roundtable, or other). Faculty members are also encouraged to use the form to volunteer to serve as chairs or discussants. All prospective participants must submit copies of their CVs, which can be attached to the submission form. Graduate students should indicate their status (ABD / not ABD) and anticipated time to degree. Applicants who have presented papers at previous APT conferences should only submit proposals signif icantly di f ferent from their past contributions.

A preliminary conference program will be completed and notification of acceptance will be given in April 2008. Registration fees are due three weeks prior to the conference.

PARTICIPATING IN THE CONFERENCE—PRE-CIRCULATION REQUIREMENT

All accepted participants must submit completed papers no later than September 22, 2008 to a password-protected archive on the APT website. Papers will be available to APT members only. Registered conference participants will need to join APT in order to receive a password enabling them to access the archive. Failure to submit a complete paper by September 22 may lead to removal from the program.

Interested faculty members, graduate students, and independent scholars can apply for APT membership by completing the on-line membership form at the Association’s website. Membership is free.
